No Explanations

Belgicia Howell once said “Never explain yourself. Your friends do not need it and your enemies will not believe it.” This quote is a good motto to live by, especially being a teenager and attending high school. Whether you want to believe it or not, everyone is not always going to like you and for the ones who do not you should not explain to them what kind of person you truly are. The people who are close to you do not need an explanation because they already know who you are inside.

By definition explain means, “to make (an idea, situation, or problem) clear to someone by describing it in more detail or revealing relevant facts or ideas.” Someone that does not care about you and will not believe you do not deserve this from you. Although it is natural, for most people, to want others to like them their enemies will not want to even if they hear the truth about the person. Because of this everyone should embrace their individuality. There’s a variety of people in the world. Some like blue and others like red (of course other colors too). If someone does not understand who you are then they are not supposed to and you should be content with it.

This quote also brings up the topic of how you should choose your friends. Being in high school it is a struggle sometimes trying to find people who actually understand you and accept you for who you are. Once you have found friends who do then you do not need to explain to them who you are because they should definitely know. No one can control who is going to like them. Enemies are everywhere and I am certain they are not going anywhere since there will not be world peace (sorry to kill your dreams). With that said life shall go on, without explaining.

  1. Hi, Andre! Your post had me thinking a lot about how we as teenagers try so desperately to fit in or be accepted. I really like the fact that you pointed out how we shouldn't have to explain ourselves to others, especially those who do not like us. If we were always trying to explain ourselves to others, I think we would eventually loose our true selves because we would be so worried about making them believe us & we would change our story constantly, & thus changing who we truly are.

  2. You are right my friend as teenagers we are constantly trying to fit in or be the person "everyone likes" but truth is not everyone is going to like us whether we try or not. We should just accept this and move on with our lives. We shouldn't be so bent on making everyone happy or like us because as kristyn pointed out we would eventually loos who we really are to begin with.

  3. This quote really speaks the truth because so many people try so hard to explain themselves to people who don't even care for them. There is no need to waste our time and energy over things that don't matter.Which is something that is really hard for teenagers to understand because they spend all of their time trying to fit in

  4. This is a great quote Andre! Many people think that since they dont fit in or aren't what people expect them to be that they have to act like someone else. We shouldn't have to explain to people why we are the way we are. But us as teenagers we want to be apart of what they call the "popular" groups, but we don't understand that half these people don't really care so we're just wasting our breath trying to tell them.

  5. First of all, I love this quote and they way you appeal to us teenagers! I really do agree with you that if you have to "explain" yourself to others in a way that forms enemies, eventually people stop caring for you and in reality there are only a few that you can
really call "friends".And a true friend doesn't question who you are but rather stands by you because they know "who you are inside". I also enoyed reading your blog because it relates to everyone!
